With 160 thousand visitors daily and 59 million a year, Florence s. Maria Novella is a head station inserted in the heart of the city, in piazza della Stazione, focal point of the Florentine public transportation system. Welcomes more than 400 trains per day and is the point of interchange between numerous daily buses and taxis. In the panorama of Italian stations, Firenze s. Maria Novella is one of the most important recent buildings. The first station in Florence, "Leopolda", was built in 1844 by Robert Stephenson, son of the inventor of the railroad, and was one of the earliest stations of Italy, placed outside the city walls. Four years later was made the second station, "Maria Antonia", within the walls of the city, an important innovation for the conception of time. The "Maria Antonia was destroyed to make way for the current station, overlooking the Church of s. Maria Novella, is a masterpiece of rationalism and one of the highest expressions of Italian modern architecture movement.
The City of Florence and Ferrovie dello Stato agreed to keep the station within the walls of Florence, so in 1932 a notice of national competition for the new building, was won by Tuscan Group led by the architect Giovanni Michelucci and consisting of Barons, Berardi, Gamberini, Guarnieri, Neuchâtel. The station was opened in 1935: a large lobby covered by a glass and steel surface and a gallery of heads that anticipates its functions, also created in Rome some years after, are its main features. The exterior cladding materials and reflect the colors of the city, while inside are works such as Italo Griselli sculptures and paintings by Otto Rosai and Mario Romoli.
